10 Step Korean Skincare Routine

Trying to find the best skincare routine has always been a priority. I have struggled with acne for so many years now and am now dealing with the scars as well. When I saw that many bloggers were swearing by the 10 step Korean beauty routine, I knew I had to give it a try. I know 10 steps may sound completely crazy- but I swear it only takes an extra 5 minutes (the days that you use a sheet mask will be a little longer). Here is the step-by-step process, which products I use, what I think is crucial, and what I think I can do without.

It takes a village!

STEP 1- Makeup remover. This step is SO important at night. DO NOT EVER sleep in your makeup! Sleeping in makeup is so horrible for your skin and more times than not it will result in a breakout. I am currently using KEW makeup remover which I got from the natural skincare isle at Target. I LOVE this and will buy it again and again. While makeup wipes are great when you are in a rush or traveling, I would not suggest using them every night. Tugging at your skin is not good for it.

STEP 2- Face wash. This is obvious! You can use whatever normal face wash that you like. I have been using Murad's Time Release Acne wash for a few months now and really like it.

STEP 3- Exfoliating. Exfoliating is an important way to rid of dead skin cells, help clear the pores, and it makes your skin so soft! Many people suggest that you only do this 2-3 times a week, especially if acne is not a huge concern for you. As acne is a huge concern for me, I exfoliate every other day, usually at night. I am currently using Acure's pore refining facial scrub and love it!

STEP 4- Toning. I think toning is a very important step. It removes all pollutants and any left over residue from your face. It also restores your skin's PH balance. I am using Belif's Witch Hazel Herbal Extract Toner and adore it. I apply it with a cotton round and my face immediately feels hydrated and revitalized. Witch hazel is also known to help clear blemishes, another reason why I chose this one.

STEP 5- Essence. Essence is considered to be one of the most important steps to Korean women, but it didn't stand out as one of the most important steps to me. It is supposed to enhance the skin's cellular renewal process, resulting in a brighter complexion. I have been using May Coop's Raw Sauce. While I loved how hydrated my skin felt after using this I don't think it made a huge difference. I will use every last drop of this but will not be purchasing again soon.

STEP 6: Serum. Serums are a great way to personalize your skin care routine based on any specific issues you might have. There are so many different serums for scaring, wrinkles, pore refining, anti-aging, acne, etc. I am currently using Korres' Wild Rose Brightening Targeted Tone Corrector in the hopes of helping my acne scars. Pat this into your skin, do not rub!

STEP 7: Sheet Masks! My favorite step! These are another great way to personalize your routine, there are hundreds of different masks that will work to help you with any issues. (I will make a post with all of my favorites soon!). Besides helping your skin, it is also a really great time to sit down and relax. Lately, I have been using Tony Moly's sheet masks because you can get them 11 for $11.77 on Amazon...AMAZING!

Step 8: Eye cream. I struggle with dark bags under my eyes (I am sure it is because I don't get enough sleep) so I always make sure to use eye cream. The eye area is so sensitive and it is really important that it is treated with care. I always seem to get eye cream as samples from Sephora so I am constantly using a new one. My favorite so far has been Farmacy's Eye Dew.

STEP 9: Moisturizer. Can you believe this is still going on?! Whether you have dry skin, oily skin, or combination skin, moisturizer is necessary A lot of people skip this step if they have acne, worrying that it will cause them to break out. The opposite is true, it helps prevent break outs! I have tried tons of different moisturizers but Clinique's Moisture Surge Thirst Relief is my favorite.

STEP 10: Sunscreen. THIS IS SO IMPORTANT! I think sun protection is something that many people, especially in high school and college, skip not realizing how crucial it is. Without sunscreen, you are exposing your skin to harmful UV rays that can cause acne scaring, wrinkles, dark spots, other signs of aging, and even skin cancer. This has nothing to do with how tan you are or want to be, you have to wear sunscreen. Even when it is rainy and cloudy. Seriously. Please wear sunscreen. I have found Supergoop's Everyday Broad Spectrum Sunscreen to be the best because it doesn't have that awful sunscreen consistency or smell. If you really don't want to add another layer, make sure that you have SPF in your moisturizer or foundation. Obviously, you don't have to do this step at night! Some people use a night cream as their 10th step at night, but I don't have the money for that so I just end my night with almond oil usually!
